13. Getting Your First Squidoo Account

· 29 Comments · OWM Month 1

Now we’ve got all the basic pieces in place, now it’s time to get rolling. Today we are going to get signed up for our first Squidoo Account. This will probably end up being the first of many accounts you have if you follow through with One Week Marketing. This one will be your “base” account, where you can keep all your “test” lenses and then when you see one take off you can move it to its own account and build around it. So let’s get started.

I have a general account with the name of adjski…which I may change. I was attempting to have another name for this campaign….when I change it in my “profile” it changes it even in my prior lens?? Please direct me on setting up a campaign account.

    Hey Steve,

“If you already have a general account create a new account for your first campaign”

You have to just start from the beginning and start a new account. Simply make sure you are logged out of any Squidoo account and then follow the last couple of days, getting a new email address, and opening a new account for this campaign.

    Hi

With regards to the general account, do you create a lense and leave it, or should you go through the steps of a campaign?

    Thanks

    Hi Ryan,

If you are creating “test” lenses for your general account I would do the posts on the 3 blogs to get my lens noticed and probably do a blog post on a blogger blog about it.

I would then let it sit and see what it does. If you start getting some traffic to it, you might want to move it to its own account and start a campaign with it.

I’m feeling a little stupid here. I have a general account at squidoo but I don’t seem to understand how I make another account for my first campaign. Do you mean to just start a new lens or a new account?

  • 6 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 6, 2009 at 11:55 am

    A whole new account.

In lesson 1, we walk you through getting a new gmail account (if you need something to help you with that) - each Squidoo account needs a different email to login with.

PS. no need to feel funny - this is what we’re here for - to get past these ‘cloudy’ points :)

  • 8 Carole Rowland // May 1, 2009 at 4:42 pm

So Lora doesn’t feel alone, I am going to ask a question that I have been holding back on because it seems the word is everywhere and everyone does it, I just don’t know what it is, how to do it, etc., etc.

Blog, Blogging, Blogger - are we going to cover this one step at a time?

Whew, now I have that out of my system.

YES ~ all in good time, it comes later so it’s covered later.

I have an existing account and a test account.

I want to transfer the lenses in my test account to a new account just for that campaign.

How do I transfer the lenses to a different account?

    Thanks
    Carole

    Hey Carole,

I’ve put a new post up on the blog that will show you exactly how to transfer a lens.

I am now lost I think!,
Started with OWM, have 5 lenses all to do with the same product/niche, so does this mean that I have started a ‘campaign’ already? I have still to go thu the process of linking them all to Rss feeds etc, should I jump lessons to catch up or start again?

  • 13 Jackie and Andrea // May 27, 2009 at 5:57 am

    Hi Daisie -

Yes that sounds like a campaign to me - I would just keep reading - all will come clear :)

If your phrases are in line with the numbers that we shoot for (lessons 5 & 6) - then I’d say you can probably just keep on trucking.

Skipping around will confuse things and you’ll miss nuggets - try and read through everything, okay?

  • 14 Amanda Brammer // May 27, 2009 at 6:07 am

Okay will carry on reading thru till I catch up to where I think I am, keep feeling I’ve got to rush this, is this normal?? Don’t answer that ha ha!

Ps your profile won’t allow me to change to my user name of Daisie instead of my full name is there a reason for that?

  • 15 Jackie and Andrea // May 27, 2009 at 6:18 am

Grins - yes and I’ll fix it :)

I’ve already created my general account with Squidoo which is where I’ll do my test lenses in the future before deciding if they are “campaign-worthy”.

All the URLs I’ve reserved up to this point are under this account. Since we’re going to go ahead with a full OWM campaign for starters, should I now create another Squidoo account (and gmail address, etc.) and transfer all these lenses over to the new campaign account? The lenses are nothing but a reserved URL at this point.

OR should I just go ahead and build it all and then when all is finished, THEN transfer them over? I’m just not sure if I’m going to be creating a whole lot more work for myself by waiting.

    Thanks!

It’s the same process either way, so whichever you prefer will be the same amount of work.

    Hi Jackie & Andrea,

Done! Created my first squidoo account.

As this will be my main account, I signed up using my real name but the username breathroughguy was already taken - too bad.

When I want to create a second account for my first campaign, can I sign up with a pen-name instead of my real name and using the same pen-name in the bio area.

Do you think it will be odd if the sign-up name and the name in the bio-area does not match up?

I can then use the same pen-name when submitting articles to ezinearticles. I understand that the latter allows us to use multiple pen-names from just one account.

I’m most concerned about this subject of pen-names because doing many campaigns will inevitably involve a wide spectrum of niches. And I will look more like a jack of all trades and a master of none.

The more so if I am into a niche that is more for the ladies - I will probably have to use a pen name like Chris or Mel…that applies to both gender…lol

So, personally what do you do for yourself? Please advise.

    Thanks

    Greg

    Congrats Greg,

All this is a matter of personal preference. I pretty much stick to topics I enjoy so I feel like it doesn’t matter that they are all in my own name.

Check in the account you have now, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter what your sign up name is, you can change the public name from your dashboard.

If you’re going to use pen names probably a good idea to use the same pen name across multiple platforms for each campaign so it’s easier to keep track of.

    Hi there,

in the account sign up process, what do you think is best: Use the same name and last name across all accounts (is this permissible by Squidoo?), or is it better if I use different ones for each campaign, and use those for all other promotion and backlinking sites (Ezinearticles, blogs etc)?

In addition to Squidoo, shall we have to create multiple accounts (one for each campaign) in these sites as well?

  • 21 Jackie and Andrea // Sep 4, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Sorry Nicos, I answered this, but I think my internet went down at the same time and it didn’t post.

The email address needs to be the different for each squidoo account, your name doesn’t really matter. You can choose a niche specific username.

YOu can only have one acct on EZA, but you can have different pen names on that site if you feel the need to separate your articles.

You will need separate blogs if your topics are very different, if you have similar keywords/niches you can use the same blog.

    Hi ladies,
I just have a quick question today. I created my clickbank hoplink and I was wondering since clickbank uses a hoplink shield is there a way to tell if my affliate link is in the hoplink?

    thanks
    sue

  • 23 Jackie and Andrea // Sep 23, 2009 at 8:18 pm

The best way to tell is click through to the product via your hoplink. Click buy now as though you were going to buy the product. Go to the bottom of the page and you should see [affiliate= _____] your name should be in that spot. If it is your link is working properly.

    Hi George -

I’m not sure what you’d need a credit card for? But yeah, just move ahead at any point here - there’s nothing that’ll break :)

    Have a great day,

I just set up a general squidoo account with a general nick name. Now should I set up another account related to my first campaign. If I set up multiple accounts how do I go back and forth between accounts

  • 27 Jackie and Andrea // Dec 6, 2009 at 1:49 pm

    Excellent Melvin!

For the most part, you’ll only want one account open at a time (focus - grin).

But should you have occasion to need more than one open, you would have to open a second browser (Internet Explorer and Firefox as an example)

A spread sheet of the various logins can prove helpful also.

    Andrea :)

    Hi,

I ‘ve set up my general squidoo account with a nickname. I assume my next account will be the start of my first campaign. However, the words in your instructions for #13 say “here you will start lenses on anything and everything you want, just to let them simmer and test them to see if they take off”. What is this? Am I missing something? Uh-Oh must be another one of those senior moments.

    Happy Holidays
    Pat

  • 29 Jackie and Andrea // Dec 19, 2009 at 7:01 pm

    Hi Pat,

Those are called test lenses ~ PPG speaks about test lenses in OWM. They are just ideas that you have and want to make a quick lens out of. Then you let them simmer, see if they get traffic. When they do, you can then build them out into an entire campaign ~ this way there’s much less guesswork involved, you already know you’re getting traffic for the topic. :) I personally love to do lenses this way ~ that way I don’t feel like I’ve wasted a lot of time and effort building a whole campaign only to not have it take off. :)
