Is It Even Worth Trying to Make Money Online?
One reader asks:
Q. Everyone is trying to make money online, so I’m only getting lost in the crowd. Even new and unique ideas don’t stay unique very long before all the copy cats come along ~ so I wonder, is it really worth my time?
A. I can understand her frustration, and the feeling of complete overwhelm. There is so much information out there, it is really easy to get overwhelmed and just feel like it’s not worth it.
Let me tell you IT IS!! It may seem that different techniques come and go so quickly, but the basics of internet marketing stay the same. The main concepts of internet marketing don’t change, the ways you implement them may, but once you get a good handle on the basics you will be able to move forward quite easily when new techniques are developed.
Here’s what I suggest. Find someone, a real person online who is making money. I’m not talking about the big A list bloggers here, I’m talking about real people, like me (Jackie Lee ), Andrea, PotPieGirl, Amy Bass, there are tons of them. Learn what it is they are doing to make money online. Most people like the ones I’ve mentioned will tell you at least the basics of what they are doing, and you may find they have written a book outlining their entire process. (One Week Marketing is an example of that)
Once you have found someone online you click with, can respect, and feel a connection to, take their model for internet marketing success and make it yours. There is plenty of room for everyone. You can use Squidoo/niche sites/blogging whatever medium you want. There are so many different niches and topics that unless you pick “make money online” you can find a way to break in the niche. (you can break into the make money online niche, but I certainly would suggest looking at other easier niches to begin with)
When you have found this person, and know what your internet marketing strategy is, quit getting emails from everyone who is NOT doing that.
Go ahead and keep getting emails from people who are using that strategy and teaching about it, those will do you good. However, let’s say you decide to do One Week Marketing. You are doing great, building lenses, following the plan. A couple days in you get this email from someone telling you how easy niche blogging is, and how you can earn 5k a month just by doing these few things.
It will be tempting. I assure you. The sales letter will be great. It will seem like an easy solution. You will go look at the page. You may even decide to give it a try.
You are now no longer building lenses and moving toward your goal. You have jumped ship before you could see the inevitable success from a plan that works.
So now you’re building this great niche blog. You’re working your way through it, have wordpress installed, got your plugins done, getting content written, you are moving right along. Then a couple days later you see this email come through your inbox.
If you just build this membership site you can get recurring income every month. You can do this, that and the other thing and be rich by tomorrow!
You think it sounds good, it sounds like the real thing. So you read the sales page, which is masterfully crafted, and maybe you decide to grab it because it sounds like a great thing to try.
So now you are no longer building lenses, or a niche blog but you are knee deep in creating a membership site.
I think you can see where I’m going with this. I can talk of this because I have lived it. I then realized this is never going to work. I’m not saying any ONE of those internet marketing strategies won’t work, because they all will. If you stay focused and actually follow through with the entire plan.
I began to notice people who were not that much different than myself start making money. When I started watching what they were doing I noticed they were doing one thing consistently. Whether you’re talking about PotPieGirl ~ building squidoo lenses and One Week Marketing campaigns one week at a time, or Amy Bass who built a nice residual income building niche blogs.
These women decided to choose one internet marketing strategy, stick with it until they reached their desired income goals. It was once I realized and reigned myself in (and deleted myself froma LOT of email lists) that I began to have success and knew that it was VERY much worth my time to try to make money online.
It only seems like things change so quickly because there are so many different things people can do to make money online. So many people doing so many different things, and you are probably getting emails from ALL of them. I have been making money with Squidoo for over 2 years now. When used with the One Week Marketing program it becomes a very viable internet marketing strategy for the beginner and intermediate marketer alike. It may seem “old hat” because it’s been around, but it still works! Sure there are new tricks you can use over there, but you can still use something that worked 2 years ago. It’s the same with most strategies. The basics still work, there’s just some new tricks you can put up your sleeve.
Well there you have it, the first post to the new Internet Marketing Help blog at LearnItStepbyStep.com. As you can see I am very long winded, and rambly, but generally have a good point to make. I’m sure when you see Andrea post her posts will be much more succinct and to the point.
I have a lot to say, and I’m not afraid to say it
I hope you enjoy the blog and we can help you overcome your biggest obstacle to Internet marketing success!
