Now we have our urls reserved at Squidoo, our profile is filled in and we’re just about ready to get started building. We just need one little thing, a domain to use to forward people to our affiliate link. This is an optional piece of the puzzle, but it is helpful to do when you are using affiliate links.

@ hkpatt Can you tell me which page from One Week Marketing you are referring to?
3 hk patnaik // Nov 17, 2008 at 11:36 am
Hi
I am talking about domain fowarding to any affiliate link in general,if it works for ClickBank it should work for Cj,Pay Dot Com etc.Additionally I did not use the ‘Masking Option’etc

You will need to look at the rules for adwords. I believe there is a rule about domains matching there. I’m not sure though.
One Week Marketing is primarily focused on using free methods to drive traffic.

I wanted to find out if it really matters at this point what kind of .com I have.
Here is what I mean, when I first started working with this on line marketing stuff, someone talked me into buy a web site http://www.tkinsfin.com which I own and payed for a full year subscription. You can take a look at it, I have no idea what I should do with it.
My point is can I use this domain as my link, or is it way to different than what we are doing here.
Thanks
6 TY EVANS // Feb 11, 2009 at 7:56 pm
BTW, thats site I used to get signed up with Amazon. You know when they asked for a web site
Thanks
7 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Ty
I’m going to suggest you go back to the conversation with Nick book in the OWM package. PotPieGirl gives an excellent explanation of why you use your own url for redirection. The specifics are on pg 29.
You do not have to use a redirection url, it is optional, but if you are going to do it, it’s best to do it “right”.
Jackie
8 TY EVANS // Feb 11, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Ok, so I basically bought a web site that is useless.
Live and learn
Could I ever build a campaign someday about that web site and promote OWM on that site. Not now of course, but would that be feasible, or would I just be wasting my time. Just your opinion.

Affiliate Shop is an affiliate program that has a redirect command in your affiliate link.
https://edge.affiliateshop.com
10 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 15, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Rebecca - A redirect in your affiliate link is completely different than what we’re talking about here - the idea in this case is to brand yourself/your domain rather than the company that you’re an affiliate for. Makes a more professional linking address and secures your hoplink.
Ty - I don’t know anything about the details of your site/domain (how it’s hosted, what sort of access you have to it, etc …) so all I really can say is it’s not appropriate for this application.
11 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 15, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Rebecca,
This is also cool because if you find one affiliate program is not working out as well as you thought it would you can simply redirect your url to a different product, but all your links will still be intact.

12 Dawn Rega Solar // Feb 20, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Hi girls it’s Dawn. I’m screaming again, ha ha!
I am having a lot of trouble with my clickbank hoplinks to see if they worked properly as per instructions on clickbank. When I pick a product I click on “create hoplink” and there are two choices: the regular clickbank hoplink and the same in html. I choose the html one because it says to if you are gonna put that link on your webpage. I put it on my lens and it is highlighted in blue and clickable, yay! But then it says to test it open a new browser (not sure what that means)so I copy and paste it into my search bar and then they say hit enter and it will go to product page, click on order button and scroll down to bottom of page and see if your nickname is there. Well, when I copy and paste into the search bar (is that the browser?) and hit enter I get an error page. AAAAgggghh! But if I hover my mouse over the clickable blue link it has a hoplink with my i.d. did I do this right?
Now I’m reading about this domain forwarding and it is opening a new can of worms. If I go to godaddy and buy a name and use that, it doesn’t really mean I have a website right? I’m just buying a domain name to use to redirect the link? Ugh! I hate when I feel like I’m taking too long to get one stinking lens published and then I hit these problems and have to wait longer. Help!
13 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 20, 2009 at 7:00 pm
HI Dawn,
It sounds like you have done the right thing. I would suggest just clicking the link in your lens once you’ve published. That should take you to the sales page. Scroll down to the bottom and it should say [affiliate=yourname] or something very similar.
My guess is when you opened the new window you put ALL the HTML in the address bar ~ you need to test just the link in that way. So take the part that starts with http://... and try it in the address bar.
But the easiest way is just to click your link in your lens, then you know for sure it works.
regarding the domain forwarding, yes, you are just using it to forward to the affiliate page, and no you do not have a website for that url.
IT is optional. Go ahead and get a good grip on the basics and you can always go back and add a redirect if you want later.

14 Jay Hurwitz // Feb 24, 2009 at 4:09 am
Hi Ladies
I have been sailing along fine on your step by step course until step 16.
You say “Once you’ve purchased your domain name, go back into your
account……”
Which account and what tab in particular will get me to the “forward”
display in your step 16 writeup?
I am sure that the answer should be obvious to me, but it is not.
I have benefited much from the course so far - and all I have done is
register some URLs on Squidoo-something I did not know how to do prior to
the course.
The course gets me to take action, which I would not have done from the One
Week Marketing Plan on its own. I would have been stumped by some
technological points that you have helped me to learn.
Thanks.
All the best,
Jay
15 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 24, 2009 at 4:51 am
Hi Jay -
You’ll want to login to the place where you registered your domain to manage the ‘forward’.
Anything to do with where your domain “points” (ie. takes people when they enter it in their browser or click on it through a link) will always be managed through the registrar.
Big thanks for the feedback on the lessons - helps a lot. And appreciate your question, I’m sure there are others who were wondering too

Not sure on the last bit of this lesson. Is the “masked title”, the actual name of the Clickbank product I am using for the campaign”
Thanks
Joyce
19 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 14, 2009 at 6:55 am
Hi Joyce -
It would be a description of what the domain is pointing at. Not necessarily the name of the product, but a keyword phrase with ‘how to’ or “best’ in front of it (as an example).
You want to describe what it’ll do for people, as opposed to the name it’s been given.
Andrea
20 TY EVANS // Mar 23, 2009 at 6:26 am
Hi Andrea,
I did the domain forwarding and everything seems to be working correctly, and I have made some sales, so it must be correct.
I just need to be sure that its ok if my clickbank ID does not show up when I click all the way thru on the product.
I guess the real question is, does your clickbank ID show up when you click all the way thru on a product you are promoting.
Because if your ID does not show up than I will feel better that nothing has gone wrong.
Thanks
21 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 23, 2009 at 7:42 am
Your ID must show on the checkout page to be credited for the sale.

22 Jane Kline // Mar 26, 2009 at 9:39 am
Hi Jackie and Andrea
Just let me say this….. I think I’m wading in the big kids pool but I know better ’cause there’s a lot more up ahead.
Another question came up that has to do with my purchase of the domain name.
Yesterday, not really knowing what I was doing, I attempted to forward a CB product using the domain name in the link.
Then I went to ‘godaddy’ to get more familiar. In the domain manager I clicked on my domain. To my surprise it opened and is promoting the CB product I’m talking about above.
I can not figure out how to get it out of there? The product doesn’t even go with the domain name.
Thx.
23 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 26, 2009 at 10:12 am
Hi Jane -
I’m not quite following what all happened, but it’s easy to update the forwarding at any point on your purchased domains.
Follow the directions in the lesson above just as if it were a fresh domain and over write the unwanted url with the correct one.
Let us know how it goes, k?
Andrea
24 Jane Kline // Mar 26, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Andrea -
I found how to remove the product from cb that I forwarded my domain name to yesterday as a test. The answer was in the godaddy domain manager and I clicked on my domain name and voila. I removed the product link and now my domain is parked once again.
Jane.

I have a snag with forwarding to Amazon.
I purchased a domain and want to forward to an Amazon product.
It seems simple from Amazon I clink to highlight, copy the highlighted area, then place this is the forwarding line at godaddy. It then tells me ‘errors are detected’.
I copied all of the amazon link.
Do you have any idea what’s up with this.
Thanks,
Jane.
27 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 31, 2009 at 5:48 am
Hi Jane -
If you’re sure that you’re only grabbing the code between the quotation marks (you can double check your link by pasting it into a browser), then it might be that the link is too long for godaddy.
You could try shortening it at http://www.tinyurl.com to see if that works?
Andrea
28 Andrea Kalaydjian // Mar 31, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Hi Andrea & Jackie
I understand the forwarding bit. But for this product I am marketing, I asked this question, ANd this is what they answered.
I asked:
” if I go to my affiliate link, and click on it, then I end up on the
normal
http://www.products.com/
So am I missing something,,
My affiliate link is
http://www.product.com/app/?af=xxxxx
They replied
“Your affiliate link is a cookied redirect link that will take the reader back to the main page however, your information is stored on their computer so whenever they make a purchase your account will be credited as long as they do so through your link.
You can track your clicks & sales in the Affiliate Center.”
So my question is: Can I say that for this produc I do not need a domain?
They also give you all the aricles to submit in yoru own website. So when I ask if I could use squidoo, they said:
“As far as a squidoo page you are more than welcome to take the articles and use them but it might be wise to change them a bit so you’re not submitting duplicate content.”
But I do not have at the momen a specific website for this product, and would not like to spend money so I think going the squidoo way or the blogg route is the best bet. AM I right or am I saying something that does not make sense. ?
Sorry for the long question.
Thanks
Andrea
29 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 31, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Hi Andrea -
It’s the af=xxxxx part of the link that tags the visitor to you.
You may want a domain for this when you get to the article marketing part of things. Ezinearticles only lets you link out with a top level domain - ie. no affiliate links or even subdomains - only straight http://www.yourdomain.com (or .net, .info, whatever)
One Week Marketing is all about testing niches via Squidoo and other free platforms. We hit on blogs later on in the lessons here.
First thing though is to identify a niche you can get traffic for. We use Squidoo. Just treat the articles they provide like any other non-unique writing - chop it up, shuffle the ideas around, reword to your best understanding. You’ll want to break it up into smaller module chunks anyway.
Gonna go delete your affiliate link
Andrea

Hi Andrea
Sorry to be so hard to understand. So You reply says I can skip teh domain now. I am nt doing ezinearticle at the moment right?
I saw this product being advertised by squidoo,( I think that what it is).
I can play with squidoo now and test niche market.
Where can I see a squidoo page of any product.
It is like a bt of a mistery to me. I tried to look at the page of Nick but it was not working.
The modules, and guestbooks are not concrete until I see a page with it.
thanks for your patience.
Andrea
31 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 31, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Andrea,
You will be creating your own squidoo page for the keywords you have chosen. We will be walking your through the entire process in future lessons here.
You are not doing Ezine articles at the moment. You are first going to build your lens. You will get to article writing later to promote your new lens.

34 Linda Servis // Apr 30, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Ah, the best of plans can go wrong. I got a domain name and I attempted to forward it. My hoplink doesn’t look anything like your example, and it doesn’t have my nickname in it. It is a veryvery long bunch of numbers ending in click here. I tried again to get another hoplink in case something was awry when I got it, but the same thing. I copied and pasted so I know I didn’t get a typo. And GoDaddy will not accept it.
35 Shalisha Alston // May 5, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Can you explain to me what a “cookie” is and what its function is?
36 Jackie and Andrea // May 5, 2009 at 12:24 pm
A cookie is a little piece of information that gets attached to people you send to an affiliate page. Cookies allow the website to link that person to you so you can get paid.
Cookies can be set for different lengths of time, and you will have to check with each affiliate program to see how long the cookie is for their program.
But basically if you have a 60 day cookie, even if a person goes to the site today from your link, but doesn’t buy until 57 days from now you will still get credit for the sale and commission.
Jackie
37 Shalisha Alston // May 5, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Okay, so on my end, in my IE, I have to make sure that cookies are enabled right? Also, what do people mean when they say “clear your cookies” that’s why you can’t see changes you’ve made to your website? What does clearing cookies mean and how will that affect tracking of my affiliate sales?
38 Jackie and Andrea // May 5, 2009 at 1:02 pm
You don’t have to do anything on your end. This is for when other people go to the website FROM your link ~ has nothing to do with you really, other than you are sending them there.
If people clear their cookies they will no longer be tied to you for that site as the cookie will be gone.
I wouldn’t worry too much about this. Getting traffic moving to the affiliate site is a much more pressing issue.

39 Jay Hurwitz // May 7, 2009 at 7:19 am
Hi Ladies
I have just noticed that clickbank is now providing encrypted hoplinks.
Will encrypted hoplinks prevent the “theft of sales” by unscrupulous affiliate marketers?
If it will, do we still need to do the domaine forwarding steps and why?
Jay
40 Jackie and Andrea // May 7, 2009 at 7:43 am
Hi Jay -
The main purpose of domain forwarding in OWM is so that you will be able to link out in your ezinearticles. They only allow top level domains to be pointed at affiliate sales pages.
It also doesn’t ’scream’ affiliate link. I know I’m personally more likely to click thru a link that doesn’t look like an affiliate link.
The encryption probably helps with link theft problems, but your ID still pops up on the sales page.
Hope this helps.

I’ve successfully created a Domain with an appropriate name. But when I come to Mask & click on MASKING, all the boxes *Enable Masking * Masked Title * Masked description Meta tag * Masked keyword Meta tag, all come up grey and will not allow me to fill them out. When I resolve this (with your help), apart from clicking on Enable Masking, is the only panel I need to fill in, Masked Title? And is this my new Domain name, or the url of my product? Sorry to be so dumb, but I’m trying hard!
Thanks, and regards

You’re doing just fine.

you are right Russell, at GoDaddy it is OK that you click. Once you’ve clicked it, it will probably say it will take a few minutes to work.
Have you tried typing the address you’ve redirected into the address bar to see if it works?
Jackie
45 Russell Hart // May 9, 2009 at 12:00 am
Thanks Jackie. Just to be sure I’ve got it right.
I clicked the Mask button, put the product (i.e. the product url) into the Masked Title box, then clicked OK. Nothing happened at all, even after waiting. I then filled in the Meta tag boxes and tried again, and again, nothing. I tried putting my domain address into the google address bar and it couldn’t be found. Have I done everything correctly? Sorry to be such a pest!

Jackie, just a thought! I’m promoting a Clickbank product. Should I be putting the product website address into the Masked title box, or should it be the Clickbank hop link?
Many thanks for your help.
RUSSELL
47 Jackie and Andrea // May 9, 2009 at 7:14 am
it seems the step we have not shown in the images above is
1. under the “forward” tab, you have to click enable forwarding, and then put in your affiliate url, (or clickbank hoplink):
http://screencast.com/t/cQNqGHQxOa
then click the masking tab and do the masking.
The masked title box is not for an url, it’s for the title of your product.
hope that makes things a little more clear.
Jackie
48 Russell Hart // May 9, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Many thanks Jackie
I put in the hop link and it went according to plan. I tested it but it doesn’t work. Please see the following:
Clickbank pays you 40% when you sell this vendors product. To refer a customer send them to this domain name:
http://tristie.charleslin.hop.clickbank.net/
Cut and paste the following hoplink into your web page:
I put in the former for forwarding. Should I have put in the ‘cut and paste’ one? If so, can I cancel what I’ve done and re-do?
I know I’m giving you a hard time, but many thanks

When you purchase a domain name to use for forwarding purposes you mentioned that a .info is ok. Very nice because it’s so much less expensive and better URLs are available.
What do you think about making this a private or a public registration. Private certainly raises the cost up. Is it worth the added expense? Necessary?
53 Jackie and Andrea // May 30, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I leave all of my domains public.
You should also be aware that the .infos renew at the regular price.

I think I have my domain forwarded correctly. I want to test it so I am typing the URL into my address bar and it switches over to my affiliate link in the address bar but I get a message on the screen saying “this is an invalid URL … ”
Shouldn’t the domain name I type in open up the sales page for the product I’m promoting? I’m not sure I understand what I should be seeing.
And when I go to use that domain name in an article that I submit to EZA or in a lens at squidoo, where should it take the reader?
I just did the forwarding and masking so maybe I just haven’t allowed enough time?
55 Jackie and Andrea // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:20 pm
when you type in YOUR url it should take you to the sales page of the affiliate product.
When you put it in the eza article it should also take them to the sales page of the affiliate product.
Give it a minute or two, but it shouldn’t take much time.
If it doesn’t work something’s probably gone wonky when doing the redirect. Make sure you copy and paste your affiliate link into the domain forwarding area.
Jackie
56 Barbara Paine // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Hmmm… I think I have it all set correctly so I’ll give it a little more time. I used the http://www.XXXXX.ZZZZZ.hop.clickbank.net format rather than the new encrypted hoplink that is created for you at clickbank. Should I be using the encrypted hoplink format instead of the one I used?
57 Jackie and Andrea // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:25 pm
nope I’d stick with the plain old hoplink. So just give it a little bit and see if it works.
Jackie
58 Barbara Paine // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:27 pm
ok — I’ll go ahead and run to the store and see what’s up when I get back! Thanks! Also, looking at my GoDaddy domain manager for that domain name, is says “domain is not forwarded” … should it say that it it’s forwarded once everything has processed?
59 Jackie and Andrea // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:29 pm
yeah it should ~ if it doesn’t say that when you get back redo it, and make sure you click save ~ you should get a message that says it’s working on it and it may take a couple minutes.
Jackie
60 Barbara Paine // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:32 pm
I just refreshed my GoDaddy screen and it now says it’s forwarding to the hoplink address I gave it. What is interesting is when I put the domain URL into the address screen it opens up a screen and the tab at the top says the name of the product that I am promoting, so I think it’s taking me to their sales page. However, instead of seeing the sales page I get this message: The target url was invalid. Please contact the publisher to get it fixed.
Could it be a problem with the product’s domain name?
61 Jackie and Andrea // Jun 7, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Did you check the hoplink by itself ~ put it in the address bar to see if it works? Check that, and if it doesn’t the problem is probably on the product side.
If it does work, it’s possible the link got typed into the redirect incorrectly ~ try copy/pasting it and see if that works.
Jackie
62 Barbara Paine // Jun 7, 2009 at 9:20 pm
I tried a couple different things and found that the problem seems to be that I originally included the “www” in the URL. Once I typed the hoplink into the address without the “www” it went through fine. So I went back into GoDaddy and changed my URL so it no longer had the “www”. Works fine!
So if anyone else is having a problem with the affiliate link not working, try omitting the “www” and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for all your help! Phew! One more thing to cross off the list
63 Nicos Stylianou // Sep 1, 2009 at 3:34 am
For each campaign, do we need only one domain to forward, or multiple ones, one for each lens included in the campaign?
64 Jackie and Andrea // Sep 1, 2009 at 3:50 am
Hi Nicos -
Oh one per topic is plenty. The domain gets pointed to the affiliate site (which will be common to all of the lanses) and where it’s really critical is Ezinearticles where you ARE able to link out to squidoo urls, but can only link to affiliate sites directly if you have a domain forwarded.
EZA is important because it’s a fast ranking site, and a very strong backlink. Earliest traffic (and even sales) usually come from there.

70 Jackie and Andrea // Sep 28, 2009 at 6:17 pm
A domain is necessary if you plan to link directly to your product sales page from your articles at ezine articles.
They are also nice to use because you can redirect your affiliate link with them. Then at some point if you don’t like your product ~ the owner changes something or anything else happens you can simply change your redirect instead of having to go out and change every single link you’ve ever put online (which is impossible)
With that said you don’t HAVE to have one, it just helps make life easier.
Domains run about $10. If you buy at godaddy you can google “godaddy coupon codes” and find a coupon code to use at checkout that will lower your price to about $7.
You can use a .info for this purpose ~ they run about 1.99 the first year, but I realized they renew at the normal price around $10 ~ you can also find a coupon code (if you buy at godaddy) that will bring it down to a little over 7.
You theoretically are buying a domain for each campaign ~ yes.
Don’t let domains stop you from getting started though ~ you can always go back and get them later when you’ve made some money.

You can only forward a domain to one thing. If you want to have 2 products you can either get 2 domain names, or you can just use the affiliate url in your content. The only reason you HAVE to have a domain forward is if you are pointing people to the product in an EZA article. Otherwise you can use straight affiliate links other places.

I have six keywords for my first campaign. Do I buy one .info domain to forward each of the six squiddoo url’s to or do I need to buy six .info url’s and use one with each squiddoo lens.

You don’t get domains forwarded for your squidoo urls ~ but for the products you are going to promote. If you are promoting 1 product (which is a good idea) you will only need to get one domain to forward to the product.

Hi J & A
Had to take a few days off - I’m wondering if the term Hoplink is the samething as Hyperlink?
Also, can you do the Domaine before you know what the Hop or Hyper link is and come back later?
Thank - Cal H

hoplink and hyperlink are two different things.
hoplink: your affiliate link for products from clickbank.
hyperlink: a link where you click the words you are taken to another page.
you need to know at least what type of product you’re going to be promoting before you buy the domain name for forwarding so it will make sense having the domain you’ve chosen pointing to the product.
You wouldn’t want to get greatcardeals.com and then have it pointing to an acne cream. That wouldn’t make any sense.

Hi Andrea/Jackie,
My product is a physical product I will be promoting for Amazon purchase, but I don’t have my own Amazon affiliate relationship as I don’t yet have a website, I’ll just be using Squidoo’s relationship with Amazon. This means no redirecting at all in my case, right? But if I were redirecting, it seems like I saw somewhere that EZA doesn’t allow masking any more. Or is that incorrect? Thanks!

Hi Gary -
It’s very easy to get an Amazon associate account. Would recommend that you go ahead and put together a blogger blog right quick - you’ll have use for one in OWM shortly and this way you’ll have options re. how you link to Amazon and also the ability to link to them off of Squidoo.
The only way you can link to an affiliate site from EZA is with a straight domain. Haven’t heard anything about the masking concerns you voice, but you absolutely need the forwarding.
The other reason to use a domain forward is because then you own where it’s pointed. Let’s say this item were available other places - or Amazon suddenly stopped carrying it (fat chance I know - more likely for them to randomly change their link structure) - you’re not tied to that one possibility with a domain - it takes about 90 seconds to redirect ALL of your links to a new item vs. tracking down the many backlinks all over creation that might need updating.

Thanks Andrea, since I am pretty clueless about a blogger blog despite reading about it in OWM, can you direct me to some place that will give me some step by step instructions on it?

Ok, I now have an Amazon Associate account. When I’m logged in to Amazon I go to the page with the product(s) I’m promoting. Up at the top I click “Link to this page” and I’m given about 7 lines of html code that already has my ID inside it. It starts with <a href=”http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html. Is this what I’m supposed to put in the “Forward to” field at GoDaddy? Seems like a lot. Thanks!

Hi Gary -
Be sure you’re selecting text only (that redirect bit is unfamiliar).
And I decided that a quick video would be easiest way to show you:

I just uploaded it and it’s a little fuzzy - hopefully it’ll get clearer as they process it
Let us know if that doesn’t work for you, k?

Hi Girl’s,
I am in the process of purchasing my Domain name. In step 2 ” Your Domain settings” it has ” Certified Domain”. Now what I want to know is which do I pick, certified or uncertified?
Thanks for all your help
