The intro module is the only module that is preplaced in each and every Squidoo lens. The intro module is the first chance you have to grab your reader’s interest and keep them reading through your lens. This is also the spot the search engines look for a couple things. Let’s give them what they want.

Hi
Is it possible to explain page 29 of the OWM Guide. No matter how many times I read the page, it does not make sense.
2 Dawn Rega Solar // Feb 11, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Hi girls! I am writing a lens and can’t get past the intro module because they must have changed squidoo since I signed up in May 2008 but I am doing this one under the same account. I want to be able to have a word in my intro module highlighted because it will be an amazon affiliate link. It will be a text link that will take people to the page on amazon with the product I am promoting. Tiffany Dow from squidoo has a great you tube video showing ya how to create these affiliate links but I think it is old and outdated. When I click “edit” on my intro module there is no long “a Word” like setup with all the icons like bold, and the html icon. I need to click on that icon as per instructions on the video and the new module is so plain! It has nothing! Just a box to put title, a box to type text and a square to upload a picture. So now I’m still at square one because I want people to click on a certain word in my intro module to be taken to amazon. Any suggestions? This learning html and links is very frustrating. Thanks ahead Dawn

Hi Dawn -
I think you’re saying you want to know how to hyperlink a phrase in a text box, right?
Here’s a site that will help you learn the format:
Tryit Editor
See if that doesn’t help?
Andrea
4 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Oh and you only need the part between the first and second < p > symbols (without the spaces - this comment box is trying to hyperlink it when I don’t include it).
Andrea
PS. Have just updated the post to include the html format you can use for hyperlinking any phrase in any textbox - on or off Squidoo
5 Dawn Rega Solar // Feb 11, 2009 at 2:20 pm
thanks a lot but the whole problem here is the squidoo module is now so plain that when you hit “edit” there is nothing to do but type then hit “save”. So if I typed all that code in and hit save nothing happens. Didn’t the module used to look different with that “Word” like toolbar where you could bold, change font, italics and there was a little icon there for html? That is all gone. also, this is html I want from amazon affiliate program so I get credit. I don’t want the code to take people just to Amazon.com. I want it to take them to a specific page. This is the problem. Where the heck did those old modules go? I can’t do anything in these modules, is that how yours look? I’m still using my last years account too so nothing should be different.
6 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Not sure about what used to be - but this is what’s here now …
That basic code that I just added is all you need to know.
You would put your item link with affiliate code where the .com is.
But alternatively, you can go grab the “text only” code from Amazon (if you’re logged in there’s a link to your affiliate links right at the top of the product page) - then change the text that’s linked to your keyword phrase.
Best way to see which words those are (if you can’t tell) is to publish and look at it. Then fix it.
This will come easier once you’ve done a couple - promise.

I’m giving up for today, I’m exhausted. I’ve been at this for hours. But I’m not giving up. Let me ask you, when you go to squidoo and click on create lens and go to your intro module does it have the “Word” bar at the bottom of the module with bold , italics, etc and html icon? Mine doesn’t. And that is the problem. If I “grab my text only code from Amazon ” like you say where do I put it? There is only “title box”, “intro box”, “a square to put a picture in” and the SAVE button. Nothing else. So if I copy and paste code there and click save nothing happens. It’s just blank. That’s the problem. Where do I put this code? I wish I could see what your modules look like because I don’t think they look like mine. P.S. on the Amazon Affiliates page it looks like it should be very simple. it says to highlight the html code and then copy and paste it into my code on my site. What does that mean?
8 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Hi Dawn,
there is no text editor at squidoo, and there never has been .
At Amazon you have to click the button that says “text link only” the picture links DO NOT work at squidoo because they use a script that is not allowed. You have to get the text only version.
When you get the text only version just copy it and then go to squidoo.
Open your intro module. then paste the code there. The anchor text given to you from Amazon will probably NOT be what you want to use, so just change the words that are in the code.
This should work, my guess is you are trying to use the image code from amazon and it just doesn’t work.
HTH,
Jackie
9 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 3:32 pm
You will just put the code in the text area for the module. You want to write a little more content and just add it in wherever you want the link to be within your content.

Hello! I love you two so much right now you don’t know!! I have no idea why it worked when I tried it before and it didn’t! I must have done something funky. Please do me a favor though, go to this lens by fluffanutta:How to add Amazon Product Links. That is Tiffany Dow and she has her video on there doing that. Isn’t that a text editor on her module? Or am I crazy? I saw one on another guys tutorial lens today, I have to find that one for you. Okay, I guess I can keep going on with my lens but remember I’m off from work this week recovering from my sinus surgery so I’ll probably still be driving you nuts! ha ha Talk to ya later Dawn
12 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Glad you got it to work.
Just remember just because you get stuck on one thing does not mean you can not move forward. If you get stuck, skip that step and move on to the next step in building your lens.
Many times just walking away from the frustration and coming back later will make things work.
Jackie
13 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 11, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Yeah it does look like there is a text editor there. That video is very old, amazon is very different now as is squidoo.
No more editor, but you can easily grab code for any amazon product with the link banner at the top of every amazon page now.

I don’t quite understand pages 28-29 of OWM. On the Discovery Tool should I leave it on or off? Also at the bootom of the Discovery Tool it asks for my 3 favourite lenses. Should I put something in there oe leave it blank? Thanks.
15 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 14, 2009 at 11:02 am
Hi Sheila -
I leave it on and add three of my related lenses there.
Try turning it on and then see what all it lists there - if you’re seeing mostly other people’s links, turn it off.
Andrea
16 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 14, 2009 at 1:18 pm
I’m just going to chime in here.
When it comes to the discovery tool ~ if you have a topic there are not many lenses on squidoo about then I would leave it on, and put other lenses that are in your campaign in the three spots.
However, if you doing a campaign that has a lot of other lenses about the same thing I would just turn it off. It causes too much link linkage and with the fact they put it at the very top of the lens it is an easy way for people to leave your lens before they’ve even read it.
You can also be a little sneaky and use a specific tag in each of your lenses for a particular campaign that others won’t have that way it will bring up all your lenses as they will all have that same tag.
It really comes down to a personal choice. You can get some traffic with it on, but you also risk losing traffic as well. Try it both ways and see how it goes.
Jackie
17 Judith Turner // Feb 21, 2009 at 10:00 pm
ok I am also one who read up to page 29 in OWM and was totally confused. I do understand it much better since reading the comments, however, how do I find out if the tags that I am using are also used by other similar lenses on squidoo.
18 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 21, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Hi Judith -
Well, there are three ways to tackle this -
1. you can leave it turned off and not worry about it
2. you can turn it on and save - see what links get listed there
3. choose a ’secret’ tag for your lenses and tell the tool to search for that (kinda cheating, but it’ll work)
Just decide what works best for your lens and roll with it.
Not a huge deal either way.
Sounds like you’re moving right along
Andrea
19 Judith Turner // Feb 21, 2009 at 10:47 pm
OK so am finally getting what page 29 means. I guess I am sort of leaning toward option 3 then. Would that mean that I only want one tag per lens instead of the up to 40 we are allowed? I hope I am getting this, I am trying to get the other squidoo guide out of my head that I read before finding OWM that says to add as many tags as possible :-). Also should I use the same tag for each lens in the campaign?
By the way I just upgraded tonight to the 12 month option and have bugged you 3 times tonight. Thank you for all the speedy replies!
Judy
20 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 21, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Hey Judith,
There’s definitely been a change in philosophy when it comes to adding tags. They are no longer as great as they used to be for getting traffic ~ which is why the change in tactics.
About the 1 tag ~ you want it to be something original and unique that other similar lenses probably won’t be using. You want it to be ONE of your tags, but not the only one.
Make sure you use it on each of your lenses in the campaign, that way the discovery tool will find all your lenses with that tag.
You are moving along and doing great!!
Jackie
21 Judith Turner // Feb 22, 2009 at 2:40 am
OK I feel really dumb because I am not getting this. On the one hand I want a unique and original “secret” tag but if I include other tags wont that make my lenses compete with all the other sites like mine if I keep the discovery tool on?
This whole course is great and I have been moving right along but this tag thing has me so confused.
22 Judith Turner // Feb 22, 2009 at 2:44 am
OK one more question, you said ” choose a ’secret’ tag for your lenses and tell the tool to search for that (kinda cheating, but it’ll work)”
How do I tell the tool to search for this but not my other tags? Is there a specific place that the secret tag goes apart from the other tags?
23 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 22, 2009 at 7:28 am
Hi Judith -
I think it’s more important to have the option to add relevant tags than it is to have the discovery tool turned on at this point (assuming your tags are ‘commonly used’ words).
Later you can add in tags that are more longtail and it may make sense to mess with this then.
It used to be smart to add a billion tags - there was a shift in the way that they are seen by the search engines that makes it different now.
Lots of other ways to add links through various modules - time to forge ahead
Andrea
(PS. Appreciate the upgrade!)
24 Judith Turner // Feb 22, 2009 at 5:14 pm
OK I am moving on :-). Since this part is still a bit foggy to me I am going to do what you suggest but thought I would test it by leaving the discovery tool turned on for one of my lenses in the campaigns and off for the other 4.
25 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 22, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Sounds like a plan - you’ll figure out as you do more of these which features you like and which you don’t - just part of the learning curve
Keep on truckin’,

Here is a pretty basic query.
How do I get to the page on Squidoo that Pot pie girl talks about on page 29 of OWM (discovery tool)?
28 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 4, 2009 at 8:08 am
Hi Jay,
Open your intro module (by clicking edit) and you will see 3 tabs at the top of that module. One of them is the discovery tool. The other is the table of contents (which should be turned on).
HTH (hope that helps)

Hi, do we need to add a photo inteh introductory module.
I actually found it a bit in reverse mode to write first teh contents, then the titles and then teh introduction. S I am chnging all my contents again. I do not like them, This is being harder than expected. I might need some private coaching
30 Jackie and Andrea // Apr 2, 2009 at 5:32 am
Hi Andrea -
Yes, it’s nice for the reader when there is an image in the intro.
You might want to do drafts in notepad first so you can change things and move them areound more easily then transfer the contents/ titles to modules?
I have emailed you about starting coaching.

Hi Andrea
How do I make the text bold in my text modules.
34 Jackie and Andrea // Apr 25, 2009 at 7:04 pm
You can use the letter b in the middle of and then the words you want bold and end with a /b in between
IF that doesn’t work put strong instead of b and it should work.
Hope this makes sense. I think the html in the comments will make it bold and not just show up.

What I was noticing was that every time I go to the same sight to get my link it is different than the last time. Apparently, there is a security reason going on here, and that will continue to be the case. Is that how you understand it?
39 Jackie and Andrea // Apr 30, 2009 at 2:59 pm
They’ve added in a link cloaker - I guess the thinking is that fewer commissions will be stolen that way. The old links will work too. And if you’re made a domain redirect for your product, then you can forward it once and leave it.
They’ve actually got an “uncloaker” tool too - lol.
Just be sure to copy and paste from there now - way easy to make errors with long ugly affiliate links

I’m completing my lenses and have a few queries.
1. I have what I’d call a headline (Lens Title) in orange type on the screen which I’ve filled in. How does this differ from the small panel “Lens Intro Title” that follows?
2. I assume “Lens Description” is actually my Intro Paragraph/s?
3. Next is “Upload an intro image”. I guess it would be good for me to include a pic related to my product? If so, does it need a title, or other description?
4. Your Blurb. Is this where I should put copy relating to me/my promoted product?
5. Big Arrow. You say to put my keywords following “Here’s my favourite link:”. Rather, can I put my product supplied banner which has a clickable link to the product website? For either of these, what sort of module should I select to put it in?
6. If I include a YouTube video very appropriate to the product (one that actually promotes the product), is 20 mins too long? I’d put it just before the Big Arrow/click here.
And Jackie, thanks for your email a few days ago about printing your lesson pics. I’ve updated software to my printer, and using Firefox, I can now print the pics.
Regards for now

Jackie & Andrea, sorry but just I more query.
I don’t really understand html, although I used it effectively to get banners, etc from my product supplier. My query is how to get boldface into my Squidoo copy. I thought it was (and tried) pretyping on “Word”, and copy/paste to my lens.
I used, for example, anxious but it didn’t work, just printed , and no boldface.
What am I doing wrong?

47 Jackie and Andrea // May 16, 2009 at 8:18 am
Hi Russell -
For 1-3 … just go ahead and put content in there and then SEE where all that stuff lands, k?
#4 - not sure what you’re meaning by ‘blurb’
#5 - you can use banners in text modules, but they’re not the same sort of call to action as the big arrow (lesson #21)
#6 - try it - as long as you are showing just the one video (lesson #21) should be fine.
Andrea
48 Russell Hart // May 17, 2009 at 12:27 am
Thanks Andrea (in ref, to my previous queries).
“Your Blurb” automatically comes up like a module when I go to create a lens. They’re not my words, they’re those of Squidoo.
And now I’m having trouble with boldface. When I use the appropriate html symbol at the start and finish of a word, or even a para, it doesn’t stop at the finish symbol, it carries on as bold to the end of the module copy. Can you help me on this?
Second, I want to create a ‘checklist’ using little circles to click (like on the ‘Poll’ module). Can I use the ‘Poll’ module, or is there a more appropriate module for a checklist? I’ve tried to search the module options but could not find one! Sorry if my queries sound a bit nonsensical.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
RUSSELL
49 Jackie and Andrea // May 17, 2009 at 9:24 am
There really isn’t a checklist type of module where you can check things ~ you could use the link list which will give you a numbered or bullet point list.
IF you want people to “vote” on the options you can use the plexo link list.
Re: Bold you need to make sure you end the html. If you are using b for bold you need to make sure you put an / before the b within the for it to work. Here’s what it should look like:
http://screencast.com/t/Xxo802tksx4
Hope that helps.

The bold, and the italics, are working fine for me. Yes, I was leaving the / out! Foolish me!
But I cannot get the Squidoo sub-title type to bold. Is there a reason for this.
Best regards and thanks to you and Andrea.
RUSSELL
51 Jackie and Andrea // May 18, 2009 at 10:52 am

It’s the way it’s coded. The headings and sub headings don’t bold, just the way it’s set up on squidoo.

52 Carole Rowland // May 23, 2009 at 12:07 pm
OK, I am confused again. Somewhere in the tutorials it mentions to turn OFF the explore related page in the Discovery Tool, because we don’t want people clicking on someone else’s page and then buying from them. But when I go to OWM page 29, PPG says to use it, but to choose a single unique tag that no one else uses and use that on all of your lenses, this way you can control what lenses are seen in the Explore More Pages area. Can you clarify this? What does she mean by a SINGLE UNIQUE TAG and how do you use that in all of your lenses?
Thanks
53 Jackie and Andrea // May 23, 2009 at 12:25 pm
if you can create a tag that is completely unique to your lenses then your lenses will show up for all of the lenses in the related lenses area.
So you would create a totally unique tag ~ that no other lenses are using, and then use that tag in ALL of your lenses, so they will show up as related lenses.
It’s kind of complicated, and I personally don’t like to have a way to click off my lens so high on the page, so I turn it off.

64 Jackie and Andrea // Aug 25, 2009 at 3:04 pm
you have to have http at the beginning of your url. and it also looks like you have an extra ” at the end of your url.
Hopefully that helps.
Jackie
65 Kerry Mason // Aug 25, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I copied and used it exactly as you have it above. I have http and the quotes are YOUR quotes. Are you saying it should be used without the quotes?
66 Kerry Mason // Aug 25, 2009 at 3:24 pm
It seems to be working now.
You might want to mention to omit the quotes that you have in your example.
67 Jackie and Andrea // Aug 25, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Kerry,
When the email came through to my inbox I can see the code ~ the code you used shows no http at the beginning of the url, which is why I said that. It also showed an EXTRA set of quotes at the end of the url. Yes, you should have one set of quotes around your url just as written above.
My guess is you’ve missed something or added something to the code ~ one little difference will make html not work.
Go back and look at your code at Squidoo again, and make sure it looks exactly as it does above.
Jackie
68 Jackie and Andrea // Aug 25, 2009 at 3:27 pm
You don’t omit the quotes in the example. The example is the exact code you need ~ as I said above I think you got an extra something in there.

Good morning Ladies,
Is there a way I can transfer the content from one module to another? Based on your #20, I want to rework my intro…which means everything will have to move down. I’m sorry if this has already come up, I didn’t see it. By the way, thanks to your kind and detailed information, I’m almost ready to launch my first campaign..which is three linked lenses at the same time. Many thanks for that. JC

You’ll have to copy and paste it into a new module. If it’s going into a few different modules I’d say copy/paste it into a text document and then you can grab the pieces you want and put them where you want them without worrying about losing the content.

Hi Jackie and Andrea,
I think I am getting how to make the text clickable in the intro module. On Squuidoo, in the intro module, after you ckick on edit, a box opens with a link icon. When I click on the link icon, a box opens and asks for a URL. So the question is : Do I paste my affiliate link in there or put my Squidoo url?
I think I would paste my affiliate link, but want to make sure.

75 Jackie and Andrea // Nov 15, 2009 at 6:36 pm
IF you look at the very bottom of this post you will see the code you need to create clickable links.
However ~ it seems Squidoo is now using a text editor in the intro module (only). To make a link there you just highlight the words you want to link and then click the anchor icon at the top of the page. That will open a new window where it asks for a url ~ you put your affiliate link in that spot.

1. How do you bold or underline words in the other text modules- not the intro?
2..The code you gave at the bottom of the lessopn, is what I would use in other text mdoules? I just want to make sure.
thanks
sue

yes that’s the html you would use in other modules to make a link.
Check out this lens to get an idea of other html you can use in your lenses and elsewhere: http://www.squidoo.com/basichtml

Hi Jackie and Andrea,
I have spent most of the day trying to add text link in another one of modules and it hasn’t worked. I understnad you use the piece of code from the lesson, do you copy/paste into the module? So, would I do something like, text than paste the code and finish the senence. I tried that several times and it din’t work. I even tried a free tool that PotPieGirl recommended on her blog,Easy Hyper Links and didn’t get anywhere. Really frustrated.
And just a quick , dumb, question, once I publish my lense, how do I find it in Squidoo so I can than do the RSS feeds?
thanks

Hi Jackie and Andrea,
I posted a comment a few days, maybe you didn’t get it. So I will try again.
I have been having a real hard time trying to put a link in my other text modules.
Just a quick question, you do find my squidoo lense in Squidoo?
thanks

Sorry Sue,
I did miss your comment. You take the code (which is at the bottom of this post). You copy the code. Open a text module or wherever you want to put your link. Where it says yourlinkhere you want to replace that with YOUR affiliate link. Then where it says you “your keyword phrase here” you replace that with your keywords. Make sure you leave all the quotes that are there in place, and all the > are exactly where they are. If you move them around or leave spaces the code won’t work.
You have to publish your lens before you can find it on squidoo. Once you’ve published at the top right of the edit page you’ll see “view lens” click that to see your lens.

sorry ~ after you open the text module you paste in the code ~ then replace the items with your own information.

Hi Jackie and Andrea
I don’t seem to have Pot Pie Girls basic OWM guide.Should I have to subscribe seperately .Like to get the special features about “max” your lens part.I have managed the content creation.

Hello Jackie and Andrea,
According to your documentation when creating multiple lenses on the same topic with keywords you only change the intro module and leave the rest the same, right? Want to make sure I’m doing this right.
Thanks so much, your step by step guide is wonderful.

no ~ you will need unique content for each of your lenses. You will want to base the content for each lens on the specific keyword you are targeting for that lens ~ so you will need to change not only the content, but also the titles etc .

You mentioned bolding your keyword anchor text one time in the intro module. Is it a bad thing to always bold your anchor text?
87 Jackie and Andrea // Feb 17, 2010 at 4:55 pm
It’s not a great thing to do because it can be annoying to read and there’s really no point in it. You always want to write your content for the reader 1st ~ and make the SEO as background as possible.

Comments 56 and 58 indicate that the Discovery Tool was eliminated, but I certainly see it. Did Squidoo eliminate it and then put it back in?

Hi Gary -
Things change online all the time - don’t sweat the details - just get your content online where it can be found using the tools at hand.

Yes, I have a question about the links. Does the link work before you publish or does it have to be published to work?
91 Jackie and Andrea // Mar 3, 2010 at 8:25 am
you have to publish it first.

Hi Girls,
I am trying to make my keywords click able link but it’s not working. My keywords are highlighted but when you click it, it doesn’t work. Any suggestions. I have a bit of a headache at the moment so I was going to try again after reading more in the comments area to see if I could work it out. I just tried to fix it again but no luck so I thought I’d summit a comment and see what you suggest. I really love this program and think you girls do a great job. Thanks and have a great day.

Hi Sharyn -
You need to copy that code at the bottom of the lesson exactly.
Here’s a site where you can play with html links online:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_links
Then when you’ve got it working, you can paste it into your lens.
Take everything out of the left screen and type in the link example for this lesson. The live version will appear on the right when you click “edit and click me”.
Hope that helps
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I don’t know exactly how I got it wrong in the first place as I copied and pasted. Anyway I copied it out myself and thanks to that site I was eventually able to work it out. It now works fine, thanks for the help.
